Why BJP's Yadav Leaders Struggle to Make a Mark Like Lalu and Mulayam

In the Hindi heartland, four prominent Yadav leaders have ascended to the position of Chief Minister, yet the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Yadav leaders have struggled to leave a lasting impression compared to their counterparts like Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav. Among these, BJP's Mohan Yadav is a notable figure, yet his impact pales in comparison to the likes of Lalu and Mulayam.

As the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections draw nearer, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has taken charge, meeting with key figures such as the late Shahabuddin’s wife, Hina Shahab. This move signals his intent to re-establish the traditional 'MY' (Muslim-Yadav) alliance that has been the bedrock of his political success. Despite his efforts, questions remain about why BJP’s Yadav leaders have not been able to attract the same level of support from the Yadav community in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Historically, four Yadav leaders have reached the pinnacle of state politics as Chief Ministers. These include the late Mulayam Singh Yadav, founder of the Samajwadi Party, his son and former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, and BJP leader Mohan Yadav. Mulayam Singh Yadav often hailed as the patriarch of Yadav politics, established his influence through the Samajwadi Party, leading Uttar Pradesh as CM three times and even serving as India’s Defence Minister. His son Akhilesh continued this legacy, serving as Uttar Pradesh’s CM from 2012 to 2017.

In Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav not only served as CM but also propelled his wife, Rabri Devi, to the position. Lalu’s influence extended to his sons, with Tejashwi Yadav serving as Deputy CM and Tej Pratap Yadav as a minister. Despite BJP’s efforts to appeal to Yadav voters by appointing Mohan Yadav as CM in Madhya Pradesh, the party has struggled to replicate the Yadav vote bank success in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The BJP's challenge in attracting Yadav votes in the Hindi heartland underscores the deep-rooted influence of leaders like Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav. As the political landscape evolves, the party will need to reassess its strategy to win over this crucial voter base.
