Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary officially inaugurated the International Pitru Paksha Mela at the Punpun River Ghats on Tuesday, September 17, by lighting a ceremonial lamp. The event was attended by notable figures including former MP Ramkripal Yadav, Phulwari MLA Gopal Ravidas, Masaurhi MLA Rekha Devi, along with Patna's District Magistrate (DM), Superintendent of Police (SP), and hundreds of locals. This year, the Mela will continue until October 2.
The Punpun River is considered the foremost site for pind daan (offering to ancestors). Devotees from India visit the ghat to perform religious rites for their ancestors. Special arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth experience for visitors, including drinking water, toilets, lighting, healthcare, lodging facilities, and mobile ATMs. The area is under CCTV surveillance with magistrates deployed 24/7. Additionally, with rising water levels in the river, the SDRF team has been stationed to provide security, and a help booth will be available to assist visitors.
Interestingly, visitors returning from the pilgrimage will be gifted packets of holy Ganga water, enabling them to continue religious practices at home. There are also provisions for online pind daan for devotees abroad, with packages starting at INR 23,000. Around 15 lakh pilgrims are expected to attend the Mela this year, according to Gaya District Magistrate SM Thyagarajan.
With improved facilities and online offerings, the International Pitru Paksha Mela is set to attract many pilgrims, further enhancing Bihar’s status as a hub for spiritual tourism.
