Rahul Gandhi, the head of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, announced on Tuesday that he had invited opposition MPs, leaders of the INDIA bloc, student organizations, and "comrades" from civil society to his house for tea. He claimed that "we are all together" in what he described as a people's struggle to defend democracy.
Gandhi stated that a combined interaction with the media would take place after the meeting. According to sources, the meeting was also anticipated to discuss a plan for coordinated demonstrations against purported "vote chori" and to demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.
"Today I have invited the leaders of the INDIA alliance, opposition MPs, student organizations, and civil society comrades to my home for tea," the former Congress head wrote in a Hindi post on X. We are all united in this people's movement to defend democracy, and it will not give up."We shall all gather and make our case in front of the media after tea. Gandhi declared, "All protests are one."
The gathering takes place one day after demonstrations against the "vote theft" accusation made it to the Supreme Court. In a significant demonstration of power in the nation's capital, opposition leaders, activists, and members of civil society staged a "March for Democracy" along a severely blocked path and filed a combined petition against SIR and purported poll irregularities. Because of the purported SIR irregularities, the opposition has been calling for the resignation of the CEC.
In Connaught Place in central Delhi, a sizable group of people with flags and placards assembled. Leaders of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, Mamata Banerjee of the TMC, D Raja of the CPI, M A Baby of the CPI-M, Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD, and Supriya Sule of the NCP-SCP were among those who participated in the march.
At Bhagwan Dass route, demonstrators broke through one roadblock but were stopped at another on the same route. Top leaders of the INDIA group later filed their suit with the Supreme Court.
The Election Commission of India, the Chief Election Commissioner, and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi are now parties to the petition. The development followed the Chief Justice of India's denial of the Leaders of Opposition's request for a meeting on the subject, citing sub judice. Gandhi announced that opposition leaders, MPs, student organizations, and members of civil society would get together once more the day following that demonstration of strength to jointly present their case to the media.
