Following days of student protests over exam paper leaks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday the formation of a task force led by software entrepreneur Nandan Nilekani to reform India's examination system.
On Instagram, Modi stated, "Our examination system should be trustworthy, transparent, and the system should make maximum use of technology." He also mentioned that new laws to address paper leaks would be submitted in parliament on Monday.
Modi continued, "The measures would tighten the law and toughen the penalties for culprits."
It was Modi's first public statement since Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday in response to weeks of rallies by young activists calling for his resignation due to exam paper leaks in May.
In his 30-second video message, Modi made no mention of Pradhan.
The protests were called off on Saturday by the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement after their demands were fulfilled.
Along with dropping police cases against demonstrators and paying compensation to the families of students who committed suicide as a result of the exam paper leak, the administration also agreed to the protesters' demands for exam system improvements.
