Damaged in two days: Kejriwal subtly criticizes the Delhi government for the power outage

In a subtle jab, Aam Aadmi Paty (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal blamed the state administration for "damaging" Delhi's energy system on Thursday amid the city's rising temperatures.

"We have put a lot of effort into repairing Delhi's electrical system during the past ten years. Kejriwal, the former chief minister of Delhi, wrote on X, "They say it takes years to fix anything, but it can be damaged in two days."

His comments coincide with Delhi's electrical consumption reaching 5,462 megawatts, which "led to power cuts" for hours in various parts of the nation's capital. According to Kejriwal, even when demand reached 8,500 MW last year, there was not a single power interruption under the AAP government.

"The highest demand in Delhi yesterday was 5462 MW. As a result, many areas of Delhi experienced several hours without electricity Friday night. The highest demand was approximately 8500 MW last year. Nevertheless, during our administration, there was not a single power interruption in Delhi," Kejriwal stated.

"What will happen in the coming weeks when the heat in Delhi increases and the demand for electricity also increases?" wondered the man.

At 12:31 PM on Wednesday, Delhi's power demand reached 5090 megawatts (MW), the highest level this season, according to officials. Later in the day, it is anticipated that demand will increase even further.

In June 2024, the city's power demand hit its highest point ever, at 8656 MW. It is anticipated that Delhi's peak load will hit 9,000 megawatts this summer.

At 3:30 pm on Tuesday, the electricity demand was measured at 5029 megawatts (MW). The rising temperatures and increased use of cooling appliances are the causes of this demand increase.

Delhi's weather is warming in tandem with an increase in electricity consumption. Today's lowest recorded temperature was 25.6°C, which is 5.6 degrees warmer than average.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that "over the past 24 hours, there has been a noticeable increase in minimum temperatures and no significant change in maximum temperatures over Delhi/NCR." Temperatures range from 24 to 26°C for the minimum and 39 to 41°C for the maximum.

With peak power demand predicted to reach 9000 MW for the first time this summer, Delhi is anticipated to experience yet another power milestone that breaks previous records, according to the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC).

This follows the 2024 demand for 8656 MW, the greatest demand ever recorded in the nation's capital. In order to guarantee a continuous power supply to more over 50 lakh customers and 2 crore citizens in South, West, East, and Central Delhi, BSES discoms—BSES RajdhPower Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL)—are getting ready.
