Abhijit Mukherjee, the son of Pranab Mukherjee, rejoins Congress

Today, Abhijit Mukherjee, the son of the late former president Pranab Mukherjee, gave his "ghar wapsi" to Congress. Political analysts saw former Congress MP Abhijit Mukherjee's return as a prelude to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's recent declaration that she could defeat the BJP in the state without the Congress' help.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, declared on Monday that she will run alone in the upcoming assembly elections and that she will secure a two-thirds majority in the 2026 elections.

In 2021, Abhijit Mukherjee joined Trinamool. His return to the grand old party will carry a symbolic message and strengthen the Congress' morale to reclaim lost ground in West Bengal, since he represents the legacy of former President Pranab Mukherjee, a Congress veteran, even though he is not regarded as a leader with pan-state influence.

Present State President Subhankar Sarkar attended the return of the former president's son.
Days after his sister Sharmishtha Mukherjee questioned Rahul Gandhi's recent trip overseas, just after the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on December 26, 2024, Abhijit Mukherjee's celebration follows.

Notably, although fighting jointly in the 2021 assembly elections, the Congress and Left parties were unable to secure a single seat in the 294-member House. Despite belonging to the INDIa Bloc, Banerjee did not sign a seat-sharing agreement with the Congress in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and the Congress only took home one of the state's 42 parliamentary seats.
